Pololu Valley
Pololu Valley is on the far right. it is one of the easiest valleys to access. There is limited parking at the top, and a fairly steep switchback trail going into the valley.
Kohala
Kohala is the oldest of the five volcanoes that make up the Big Island (Kohala, Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, Hualalai, and Kilauea). Kohala hasn't erupted in 120,000 years.
Halema'uma'u Crater
This photo was taken on February 3, 2022 as lava continued to erupt inside the crater. Lava eruptions on the Big Island come and go, but when they are happening, they can be spectacular to see!
Kilauea Iki
This was the site of the highest lava fountains ever recorded in Hawaii, 1,900 feet. The brown mound on the lower right is the spatter rampart from that eruption in 1959. There is now a very interesting hiking trail there that cuts across the crater floor, the white line through the middle of the crater.
Green Sand Beach
This is a few miles east of South Point, the southernmost point of the entire United States.
Fissure 8
Recently renamed Ahuʻailāʻau, this was the site of most of the lava eruption during the 2018 eruption in the Leilani Estates subdivision that destroyed more than 700 homes.
Lava Channel
During the 2018 eruption, the larger lava flows formed channels that flowed like rivers. As the eruption waned, the channels emptied. A highway was recently rebuilt cutting through the lava channel over the same path it followed before the eruption.
Lava channel 2018
This is the same section of the lava channnel during the eruption in 2018.
Mauna Kea
Photographed at the 12,500 foot level, Mauna Kea looks like another world!
Akaka Falls

Lava from 2017
When lava flows occur we have the opportunity to see some pretty spectacular sights. Maybe you'll be lucky and get to see it!
